Katie

The majestic Katie stands tall and proud on the front lawn of FA. She represents functional art in its purest form — our own Salvador Dali!

Katie was designed by owner Leon, and hand-crafted by Charlie, a blacksmith well known in the area for designing and building the Elgin Railway Market indoor fireplaces. Recycled pipes, fertilizer containers and an old compressor blend into her tall body. Start a fire in her belly and watch the smoke draw up and warm her up. Come and relax next to her warm glow while enjoying the amazing view. Yellowwood cocktail tables and high chairs allow for comfortable seating without the danger of causing a runaway fire in our beautiful valley.

A unique attraction for guests seeking a memorable luxury farm stay in the Western Cape.

Working Farm

Faraway is a working farm in the Overberg District with a variety of fruit trees and a flock of sheep. The 4-ha Bingo apple orchard on the far side of the Estate produces export-quality fruit.

The green pastures on the hilly slopes of Faraway Estate are where you will find our Dohner-Merino flock of sheep. The mountainside above the farm is pristine fynbos of beautiful Protea, Erica, and Leucadendron species, which are used for functions on the estate.

A rare and authentic experience for guests looking for family retreats, farm stays, and countryside getaways in the Western Cape.

These multipurpose decks can be utilized for pre-drinks, afternoon sunset space, brunch area, or simply a private area for reading or meditation. A stunning feature for guests seeking a peaceful countryside escape in the Western Cape.

Come and enjoy!

Local Produce & Olive Oil

The olive grove produces a variety of olive cultivars. These olives are cold-pressed by a neighbouring farm and tinned on the Estate. Faraway Estate’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Green and Black Olives in Herby Vinegar, and Olive Tapenade can be purchased from the Estate or from selected delis and surrounding wineries.

Fresh Southern Black figs are harvested in February and March each year, and Faraway Estate guests are welcome to harvest their own figs during fig season. Chunky apricot jam, thick green and black fig jam, and green fig preserve can also be purchased from the Estate and selected delis and wineries.

A highlight for guests who love local Cape Winelands produce and enjoy authentic farm-style experiences.

Nearby Attractions

Wine Farms

There are so many incredible wine farms close to Faraway Estate, it would be impossible to list all of them here, but here are some of our favourites! These nearby estates are perfect for guests wanting to explore the Cape Winelands, enjoy wine tasting, or add memorable outings to their Western Cape getaway.

Stettyn Cellar

A small team of dedicated wine farmers, guided by winemaker JM Crafford, has combined a “quality first” approach with innovative winemaking and is rapidly transforming Stettyn Cellar into a progressively marketed and sought after wine venture.

Villiersdorp Cellar

Villiersdorp, the pearl of the Overberg, is the most recent discovery of wine writers in South Africa. Exceptional wines are produced in this beautiful valley of splendour by Villiersdorp Kelder.

Aan De Doorns Wine Cellar

Situated just 8km from Worcester on the R43 to Villliersdorp, Aan de Doorns is one of the larger cellars in the Worcester region. Since its establishment in 1954, the cellar – which derives its name from the stretch of thorn trees on the banks of the nearby Doorns River – has been striving towards excellence.

Eagle’s Cliff / Arendskloof

Situated between Villiersdorp and Worcester, in the breathtakingly beautiful Breede River Valley, is the home of Eagle’s Cliff Wines. We produce a wide range of exceptional quality red and white wines, namely Arendskloof, Eagle’s Cliff, Dwyka Hills and Hoeks Rivier.

Brandvlei Cellar Wines

Brandvlei Cellar was founded in 1955 and was originally situated next to the Brandvlei Dam. When the dam was enlarged in 1974 the Cellar was relocated to its present position. The modern new Cellar can be found on the R43 road between Worcester and Villiersdorp in the beautiful Breede River Valley. The name Brandvlei, originally Brandende Vlei, has long been described as the area around the Hot Water Springs.

Franschoek Wine Tram

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a hop-on hop-off tour that takes you to some of the most beautiful and historic wine estates in the Franschhoek Valley. The tour starts and ends at the Franschhoek Terminal, and there are seven different lines to choose from, each visiting a different part of the valley.

The trams are a combination of vintage-style railway trams and open-air tram-buses, allowing you to enjoy views of the vineyards and mountains from both inside and out. As you travel, you’ll hear narration about the history of Franschhoek and the wine industry in the valley.

At each stop, you can hop off and explore the wine estate, or book a wine tasting, cellar tour, or lunch. There are also a number of other activities available, such as chocolate tasting, olive oil tasting, and boules.

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a great way to see the Franschhoek Valley and sample some of the delicious wines the region has to offer. It’s also a fantastic option for guests looking for local attractions near Villiersdorp, especially if you’re not up for walking or driving.

Benefits of taking the Franschhoek Wine Tram:

  • Visit a variety of wine estates without worrying about driving.

  • Hop on and off as you please and spend as much time as you like at each estate.

  • Learn about the history of Franschhoek and its wine industry.

  • Enjoy beautiful views of the vineyards and mountains.

If you’re looking for a fun and informative way to experience the Cape Winelands, the Franschhoek Wine Tram is a great option.

Elgin Railway Market

The Elgin Railway Market is housed in an old apple warehouse converted into a bustling Steampunk-inspired Art Deco market boasting local food and craft vendors, live music, and serving as the gateway to the beautiful Elgin Valley — a must-visit attraction for guests enjoying a family getaway or group retreat in the Western Cape.

The original building was built in the 1940s by Italian POWs. The concrete tapered columns and curved box gutters bear testimony to their craftsmanship. It has been extensively renovated into a showpiece well worth a visit.

The Ceres Rail Company, with their stable of 80-year-old steam trains, operates a Cape Town to Elgin weekend return trip. The train’s arrival is a must-see for children (and adults) as it roars in with thunderous whistling, puffing, and hooting. Visitors to the market can greet the train on the station platform or view its arrival from the Market’s leisure deck overlooking the railway platform.

For more info, visit Elgin Railway Market’s website.

Whale Watching

Whales are without a doubt some of the most mysterious and beautiful creatures in the ocean, and many people travel hundreds of miles in the hope of spotting one of these gentle giants.

Thankfully, Hermanus — one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world — is very close by. Hundreds of whales can be viewed from land during the months of early June to late November.

With the largest number ever spotted in a single day being 196 whales (as recorded by a Cessna light-plane aerial survey in Walker Bay), Hermanus offers an unforgettable opportunity for visitors enjoying a Western Cape holiday, family retreat, or luxury countryside getaway near Villiersdorp.
